Stoneblind began in January 1991 in the city of Georgetown, Guyana. After the dissolution of the group Sentinel, two of it’s former members , Colin Waaldijk and Mark (Wiggy) Razack, decided to form a new group. A few days later Mark came up with the weird name “Stoneblind” for the group’s name. The inspiration for the name had flowed from a piece of art that hung on the wall of the practice studio at GEMS RECORDS (at that time defunct), in the centre of the city of Georgetown. The piece of art which was created by the late drummer and close friend Carlton Carrington, was an abstract black and white piece seemingly depicting the twisted tortured realities of a schizoid human being experiencing life in a spellbound world…Several days later, the name had invoked itself fully and was finally married to the group. After spending several months in Suriname trying to record an album and doing live gigs Stoneblind returned to Guyana the day after Boxing day 1991. Henceforth they went through many long intense episodes of trials and tribulations. The new drummer ,Joey Morgan, who had replaced Gordon Hall aka “Saki” (since then resident in Suriname until today), got cut in a fight with his brother and died days later. This loss, along with many other intense experiences, took it..s toll on the group and many times the future of the group hung by a thin thread. Personal relationships, years of effort, disapointment, depression and uncanny weird experiences contributed greatly to the group’s songwriting and expression. Along with all of that, another drummer, Tony Czar, who played with the group on a number of live occasions, died from malaria. Bruce Bamfield, another musician who played bass briefly with the group had also died a few years previous to Tony Czar from malaria too in Suriname. Two other guitarists, Tony “‘Priest” Kissoon and Donald, fell by the wayside as they succumed to the temtations of the “white lady” aka cocaine. No doubt Stoneblind had become a self-haunting enigma (some even spoke of a curse or some such) (the new drummer Monty Thornhill refused to play the song “Nickel Ride” as he felt that the song was connected with the death of Joey Morgan) and many times the flashbacks from some of the experiences in Suriname, especially, threatened the continued existence of the group! Somehow though, the two founder members kept the faith and held it together. Some of the songs that followed out of all this are what you hear on the album “Blinded by Faith”. Stoneblind, forever, wishes the best for all of those who are still with them, welcomes the newly acquainted and pays tribute to all of those dearly departed. Farewell one and all.
